Psy Trance Background
Posted: 03.02.2012
Psy Trance or Goa Trance as it was once known gained notoriety through the early to mid nineties where it was the soundtrack to many beach or full moon parties throughout Goa in India. It quickly became popular throughout Europe with the birth of several festivals including Gaia in France and VuuV in Germany.
In 1993, the first Psy/Goa album was released featuring tracks from the likes of Man With No Name and Hallucinogen which quickly escalated it's popularity further with more and more DJs recognising and pushing the style.
The music itself has a very distinct sound, ranging from 140-150bpm it is generally faster than most types of electronic music and makes use of ever-changing layers of sounds over continuous rhythmic drum patterns and big synthesisers.
Psy Trance also has many different sub-genres including Psy Breaks, Full On, Dark and Progressive with each having their own subtle characteristics and have their own niche following.
These days Psy Trance in the UK has a more underground scene, popular with the free party movement and some of the biggest artists include the likes of Astrix, Infected Mushroom, Yahel, Neelix and more.
To get a taste of just how broad the genre can be, check out this Soundcloud account which has many different takes on the Psychedelic sound.
